Ipes Guernsey has provided a key insight into employment for two young people with communication difficulties.
John Dedman and Tom Moore have just completed a ten month placement in Ipes’ Guernsey office. The work gave them the opportunity to interact with Ipes’ client facing and support teams and the experience of working in an office environment.
Communicate is a local charity that supports young people with communication difficulties with the aim of finding them employment. To support the work placements in local businesses and to develop their skills before entering the work place permanently.
Communicate founder Sarah Bamford says, “Young people with social, language or communication difficulties unfortunately find it difficult to find suitable full time employment. Often whilst these young people have very valuable and suitable skills this may not come across in interviews or whilst searching for employment which proves to be a problem especially in a competitive employment market.”
John Dedman says, “I thoroughly enjoyed my ten month placement with Ipes and found the challenge of working in an office environment tackling new tasks and meeting deadlines really helpful in developing my skills and understanding of the workplace. I will definitely take on board what I have learnt which will hopefully help me in finding full time employment.”
Tom Moore says, “Whilst working in a financial services business wasn’t an industry I would have thought of looking into as I am interested in technology and systems support; I found my placement at Ipes really interesting and challenging at times. Working as part of a team and taking part in a variety of activities was something I really enjoyed.”
Ipes Guernsey’s Managing Director Michel Davy says, “We hope John and Tom have had a valued experience from their placement here at Ipes. As a business we have also benefited greatly from having them both working with us. Their enthusiasm and willingness to be part of their teams and tackle new challenges meant they became a valued part of our company.”
Ipes was established in Guernsey in 1998 and now employs more than 90 people locally as well as having offices in London, Luxembourg and Jersey. Ipes also has offices in London, Luxembourg and Jersey.
