Walkers are recognised for their achievements

A special assembly was held at Vauvert School today to celebrate the efforts of walkers who took part in the 40th World Aid Walk.

Each year the World Aid Walk Committee recognises several individuals, groups and schools who have made an extra special contribution to the event.

The popular 20km event, which took place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, has raised more than £30,000 for ActionAid, Christian Aid, Save the Children, Oxfam and the Tumaini Fund. This year the event celebrated its 40th anniversary and saw more than 1000 walkers taking part, a record in the event’s history.

Ipes has sponsored the event for 10 years and this morning the Company’s Chief Financial Officer, Gavin Hayman presented the children and individuals with their awards. He says, “Taking part in the walk is an achievement in itself however going the extra mile in the way this morning a number of the award winners did, is fantastic.

He continued, “The attitude of the children to the walk’s purpose is quite humbling and as a local Company we are proud to be associated with such an event, which not only raises money for lifesaving causes but is also a memorable community event.”

For the fourth consecutive year Blanchelande student Monique Michel received the award for the individual who raised the most money and the trophy for being the girl who raised the most sponsorship. Elizabeth College student Fergal Morrissey was awarded the highest boy trophy whilst Hautes Capelles Primary School received recognition for being the highest fundraising school contributing more than £2500.

An award is also given to someone or a group of people who deserve special recognition for their efforts. This year a group of children and their Carers from the Garden Hill Residential Centre were awarded the prize. One of the children said after receiving the Award, “Although I didn’t get the best start in life I appreciate that my life is much better than the children we are raising money for who live in poverty. We have far more comforts in life than the children living in poverty can imagine.”

A group named the St Saviour’s Snails picked up the Highest fundraising team award, which included one family with four girls the youngest being six who all took part. The family trophy which looks to award the highest fundraising family was awarded to the Arundales who for the second year raised a record amount.

All the participating schools have received certificates and the Chair of the walk Bella Farrell says, “School children are at the heart of the World Aid Walk and each year hundreds take part, this is why we believe it is so important to recognise their efforts. I would also like to extend our thanks to everyone who took part or supported the walk in some way. Our 40th year has been a record year and we hope Guernsey’s World Aid Walk will continue to grow for many more years to come.”
