A local accountancy student is looking to promote Guernsey through her studies
Partly qualified Accountant Chelsea Lamb has been short listed for the PQ Magazine Accountancy Student of the Year award.
The award recognises the achievements of a partly qualified accountant based on their performance, dedication and enthusiasm for their career.
Chelsea, who works for Ipes, a locally headquartered fund administrator, has been studying since December 2008 and hopes to be qualified by 2011. She was nominated by a former Director of Ipes and says, “Finding out that I had been short listed gave me an incredible boost. A lot of time goes into studying and doing so while working full time requires a lot of discipline, determination and time management, so to be recognised is great”.
Chelsea continues, “Guernsey can easily be left off the map as it’s a small place however the training the island agencies provide supported by employers is second to none and I think its fantastic it has been recognised in this way. If I can raise the profile of training in the island and how successful gaining professional qualifications are through this award, I will have achieved something beyond personal recognition.”
More than 90% of Ipes’ employees are either professionally qualified or currently gaining qualifications. The Group Head of HR Rosanne Spurrier says, “good training empowers our people to reach their career and job expectations while providing real business benefits. We actively encourage all our staff to undertake training.”
The national magazine is a popular and well respected industry publication which gives partly qualified accountants tips, advice and business news to help them through their studies. While PQ Editior Graham Hambly won’t be drawn on the exact number of entries he says, “the Award was hotly contested and the six short listed students have had to beat off some tough competition from a large number of entries, they all deserve their place as nominees.”
The judging panel made up of Professor Prem Sikka, AAT brand director Andrew Williamson and PQ magazine editor Graham Hambly will be selecting a winner based on a 150 word submission that has been written about the nominee. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at Quaglino’s in London’s west end on 23 February.
